How Your Past Shapes Your Future

It was around twelve years old that I realized that not everyone else’s parents made it to all their games and coached all their teams like my parents did. Realizing the choices and tradeoffs my parents made in order to be present, available, and actively participate in my life has had a huge impact on how Michelle and I approach our family’s life today.

We've worked hard over the past ten years to structure my financial planning practice around our family. Sometimes this means choosing time over money but that’s a tradeoff we’re willing to make. We’d rather be able to walk Reagan to school each morning, coach her soccer team, and pick up Reese early from daycare.

Have you taken time to ask what past experiences in your life have shaped who you are? And how they’ve impacted how you choose to live your life – financially and otherwise – today?

Asking yourself questions like these can both scary and enlightening.

You may uncover some things you’ve been doing merely because you’re pre-programmed to do them that way. You also might discover that despite your best intentions, your actions aren’t always aligned with what you’re trying to accomplish.

It all starts with awareness and that requires an openness to ask the right questions.

When you’re open to exploring how your past has shaped you and what your natural inclinations are, you begin to notice what’s out of alignment. And when you know something needs to change, you can then start the process of making the adjustments necessary to live the life you desire.

The good news is that you don’t have have to navigate this process alone. If you think you might need a guide to help your family get where you want to go, let’s talk.
