Finding something to believe in

It’s a crazy world we’re living in these days, isn’t it?

This sentence seems to be coming up more and more in my daily conversations. And when it does, I usually point out that it’s always been, and will continue to be, a crazy world. But it’s also important to acknowledge this crazy feeling and tackle it head on.

The truth is, maintaining our sense of well-being in a crazy world requires having something to believe in in the first place. Unfortunately, we won't find well-being among the many things in life that are outside of our control. Luckily, the solution can be found within us.

Believing in yourself and your ability to adapt no matter what life throws your way is a superpower for maintaining your well-being in a crazy world.

It’s natural to want everything to work out as we planned, even if we know it’s unlikely to happen. And that’s why it’s so important to realize that we don’t need everything to work out exactly as planned in order for us to be ok.

If you’re struggling with this concept, I’d suggest taking a look to your past for reinforcements.

  1. What’s something in your life that started out as a negative that turned into a positive in hindsight?

  2. What’s something bad that happened in your past that you’ve been able to overcome?

Your answers to these questions come with a dual benefit.

First, you’ll find you have a track record of overcoming adversity, which should give you more confidence in your ability to continue to do so in the future. Second, you might notice current areas of your life where things outside of your control are holding you back. And you need to look no further than your track record to remember you can adapt and overcome any current struggles, too.

So what’s it going to be?

Will you choose to complain about how hard life is and compare it to the fabled “good old days”?

Or…

Will you put your faith in your ability to adapt to whatever life throws at you?

If you’re looking for something to believe in that will allow you to maintain a sense of well-being in this crazy world, start by believing in yourself.
