Get tomorrow right

I recently watched David Serna’s interview with Jason Fried of 37 Signals. Jason has long been someone I’ve admired for his approach to both business and life, and David is an excellent interviewer. The whole interview is worth a watch or listen but let’s focus today on one mantra that Jason shared.

Get tomorrow right.

Jason speaks about how he’s never really had longer term goals for his business or life. Instead, his mantra has always been about getting tomorrow right.

Now, as a financial planner, you’d probably think I’d be in the longer term goals camp. But this is something my own thinking has evolved on over the years.

Sometimes we can get frozen by thinking too far into the future.

Sometimes we can set a long-term goal and then become reluctant to course correct that goal when the situation calls for it.

That’s why I find so much value in instead focusing on getting tomorrow right.

It immediately relieves the feeling that you need your future all planned and figured out.

It also releases you from feeling like you must work towards goals that no longer serve you.

So whenever you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just unsure, try giving Jason’s mantra a shot instead.

Focus on getting tomorrow right.

You don’t have to do it all right now. You don’t have to worry about how it’s all going to play out in the future. Instead, you just need to wake up tomorrow and give it your best.

Without much thought or worry, you’ll quickly find yourself stacking ‘tomorrows’ that compound in your favor over time.
